Recycling Cans for Missions Money

August 29th, 2009 ProlificMom No comments

Last year in August I decided to get my kids involved in a missions giving project.  Money was tight because I was unemployed, so I decided that we would collect aluminum cans.  The Mister was not at all happy about my plan to store the cans in the garage, but I didn’t want to take them to the recyclers until I could fill up the back of my car.

Recycling Cans at Valley Recycling in Grand PrairieThis weekend he cleaned out the garage,  and with a little help from #5 we took the cans to be recycled at Valley Recycling in Grand Prairie.

Cash for Cans - Mission Money

At about  40 cents per pound we earned $15.20.  That’s roughly 37 pounds of aluminum cans. (By the way, I recently kicked the caffeine habit, so no more aluminum can collections for the ProlificMom house.)  Even though this is not a lot of money it was a great lesson for the kids, and the money will go to a missions group called Loved the Unloved to help them fund a fresh water well at a school that they support in Africa.

If you live near Grand Prairie, Texas and you are looking for a place to recycle aluminum cans, Valley Recycling is a good place to go.  (But you might want to take a GPS to help you find them.)   They were friendly and helpful.  Overall it was a great experience.
